Doug Button is the Deputy Director of the Real Estate Services Division (RESD) within the California Department of General Services.  He oversees the department's largest division which comprises five operational branches with operations running the length of the state, more than 2,100 employees and an operating budget of over $420 million.

Mr. Button is uniquely positioned to bring a fresh, creative and entrepreneurial approach to the real estate challenges facing state government today, including the pursuit of green building initiatives and a strong emphasis on increasing partnerships with small and disabled veteran owned businesses on state projects.

With over 26 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry, Mr. Button is adept at creating and implementing asset management strategies that maximize the value of the state's portfolio.  He recognizes and navigates the intricacies of state government processes, and encourages private sector involvement to increase potential opportunities for the state.

Prior to becoming RESD's Deputy Director, Mr. Button held other RESD positions, including Assistant Deputy Director, Chief of the Professional Services Branch's Real Estate Leasing and Management Section, and senior and associate level positions as a real estate officer.  Mr. Button also worked for 18 years in private sector commercial real estate in positions with increasing levels of responsibility.  He joined a commercial real estate firm in 1981 as a property manager, and his last position in the private sector was Senior Vice President of Asset Management for one of the oldest and largest real estate investment trust firms in California.

Throughout his career, Mr. Button has held leadership positions in the operational areas of real estate asset management, encompassing development, financing, leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, construction, and property management.  He meets each challenge with enthusiasm and a contagious energy that earns support from colleagues at all levels.  He is team oriented with a clear focus on achieving organizational goals.  Through the establishment of well-conceived strategies and the creation and implementation of policies and procedures, he has brought structure and unity to each of his job assignments.

Mr. Button keeps his knowledge of the real estate business up to date by maintaining career affiliations with professional real estate organizations.  Through his interactions with real estate industry professionals, bankers, attorneys, investment brokers, Wall Street analysts, taxing authorities, state department directors and agency secretaries, Department of Finance executives, legislators, and local government officials, he stays current on the state's real estate needs and opportunities.
